You can marry an Israeli in either of the following ways, but if you are an Israeli who does not have an address in Japan, you will need to complete the marriage formalities from the Israeli side first.

How to apply for marriage from Japan

(1) Prepare “teudat leida (national registration)” of the Israeli.

Prepare the “teudat leida (national registration)” of the Israeli national. Ask the Israeli embassy in Japan or a family member living in Israel to get it for you.

(2) Receive an apostille at the Israeli embassy in Japan for the documents mentioned in (1) above.

If you ask the Israeli embassy in Japan to order the documents, it will take about 3 weeks to complete this procedure.

It will take about 3 weeks to complete this process if you order the documents from the Israeli Embassy in Tokyo. You will also need to have the documents translated and certified by the Israeli Embassy in Tokyo.

If you have been married before, you will also need a death certificate if you have lost your former spouse, or a divorce certificate if you have separated.

(Required documents)

  • A certificate of legal capacity to contract marriage (with Japanese translation)
  • In the case of Israel, a “teudat leida” with an apostille is required.
  • In Israel, you will need to submit a “teudat leida” with an apostille, which is also required for a spouse visa application.
  • Birth certificate of the Israeli national (with Japanese translation)
  • Certificate of nationality of the Israeli national (with Japanese translation)
  • Proof of identity (residence card, driving licence, passport, etc.)
  • A copy of the family register is also required if the marriage is to take place outside of the Japanese national’s domicile.

(4)A copy of your family register is also required.

(5)Submit the “Certificate of Acceptance of Marriage” with apostille to the Israeli Embassy in Japan with an English or Hebrew translation, and receive an official document stating that the marriage has been accepted.

How to get married in Israel

(1) A Japanese national obtains a certificate of legal capacity to marry and obtains an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If the document is translated into English or Hebrew, it must be certified by a notary public.

(2) A Japanese person obtains a “Singleness Certificate” etc. at the Japanese Embassy in Israel.

(3) The “Certificate of Singleness” is authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel.

(4) The two parties to the marriage go to the municipal office with jurisdiction over the address of the Israeli and obtain a marriage certificate.

(5) Submit the “Notification of Marriage” to the Embassy of Japan in Israel or to the municipal office in Japan.
