If you are getting married in Japan, it is easy to complete the formalities in both countries.

In the case of a marriage procedure carried out by the Japanese side first

1. The Turkish national obtains a certificate of legal capacity to marry (certificate of celibacy).

You can obtain this certificate by visiting the Turkish Embassy in Japan.

In addition to the application form, the following documents are required

  • Single certificate of Turkish national: 1 copy
  • Turkish national’s identity card: 1 copy
  • A copy of the passport of the Turkish national: 1 copy
  • Copy of the passport of the Japanese national: 1 copy
  • Return envelope: 1
2. The two parties submit a marriage notification to the municipal office in Japan.

The requirements may differ from region to region.

Documents required in addition to the marriage registration form

  • Turkish national’s certificate of legal capacity to marry: 1 copy
  • A Japanese translation of the Turkish certificate of legal capacity to marry: 1 copy
  • A copy of the family register of the Japanese national (not required if the application is filed at the city hall of the Japanese national’s domicile)
  • Passport of the Turkish national (original copy to be presented): 1 copy
3. Report to the Turkish Embassy in Japan and obtain a Marriage Certificate.

The marriage certificate must be submitted within two months of the notification of the marriage in Japan.

In addition to the application form, the following documents are required

  • Certificate of Acceptance of Marriage Registration: 1 copy
  • A translation of the certificate of acceptance of marriage registration (in English or Turkish): 1 copy
  • A copy of the Japanese family register (showing the name of the Turkish national): 1 copy
  • A translation of the Japanese family register (in English or Turkish): 1 copy
  • A photocopy of the Turkish national’s residence card (the original must be presented): 1 copy
  • A copy of the Japanese national’s passport (original copy to be presented): 1 copy
  • Five passport size photographs of the couple: one each.

It is recommended to attach a written request for a marriage certificate written in Turkish by the Turkish person himself/herself, although this is not a necessary document, but it can be a simple one.

If you wish to get married in Turkey first

1. Submit the marriage petition and other necessary documents to the Turkish city hall.

The following documents are required in addition to the marriage petition

  • Passports of both parties (original documents must be presented)
  • Birth certificates of both persons: 1 copy each
  • Translation of the birth certificate of the Japanese person (in Turkish): 1 copy
  • Health certificate of the Japanese person
  • Health certificate of the Japanese person must be issued by a national medical institution.
  • The health certificate of the Japanese person must be issued by a national medical institution. Health certificates issued by private medical institutions will not be accepted.
  • 6 passport size photographs of both applicants.
  • A copy of the family register of the Japanese applicant: 1 copy
  • A translation of the Japanese family register (in Turkish): 1 copy
  • Certificate of celibacy (or certificate of legal capacity to marry for Japanese nationals)
  • (Please note that a Turkish translation is required, which may need to be notarized by a notary.
  • If obtained at a Japanese embassy or consulate in Turkey, no certification is required.
  • If obtained from the Consulate-General of Japan in Istanbul, it must be authenticated by the Governor of Istanbul.
  • If obtained at the Consular Section of the Japanese Embassy in Turkey, the document must be authenticated by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara.
2. The Turkish city hall issues a public notice of the marriage and confirms that there are no objections from other people (21 days).
3. Take an oath at the wedding hall of the Turkish city hall, sign the marriage certificate and obtain a family book (proof of marriage).
4. Report to the Japanese Embassy (Japanese Marriage Registration).

Required documents other than the marriage registration form

  • A copy of the original Family Handbook (issued by the municipality) of the Turkish national.
  • Japanese translation of the Family Handbook: 1 copy
  • Passports of both spouses (original documents must be presented)
  • Identity card of the Turkish national (issued by the Turkish government. Identification card of the Turkish national (to be presented in original)
  • In order to confirm that you are single, please register your marriage before changing your spouse’s ID card.
  • Japanese translation of the Turkish ID card: 1 copy
  • Copy of Japanese family register (within 3 months): 1 original copy

After completing the marriage procedure, you can apply for a spouse visa at the Immigration Bureau.
